The D90 has a higher grade AKM chipset, but being integrated in the amp is also an advantage for the Phonitor. It’s kind of a wash.
uhhhhh i found out what it was. The channels are reversed on the internal DAC! how?
What?! No f-ing way!
haha, yeah… that’s what was throwing me off. I reversed the RCAs and all of a sudden they sounded more the same. And then I went on youtube and did the stereo left and right test and sure enough it’s reversed… =D
Uhhh from besides they screwed up, do you have the matrix switch on? I wonder if it’s a software issue
No, the crossover is turned off. I’ve tried it a bit… but right now it’s turned off.
Hmm. So doing a channel test on the internal dac yields an incorrect result? And you can verify the topping is wired correctly?
yes… doing a channel test, the stereo is reversed. Have no tried USB yet though.
And yes I checked wiring on the Topping
Hmm, I would try USB. Are you using optical? Sometimes windows can fuck up optical with weird multichannel stuff or processing
yeah, I’ve tried optical and coax. Same result. Will try USB in a bit.
Hopefully USB solves it for you lol
I don’t know if I care enough to mess with it. lol But theres the DAC unit in the corner. I can try USB… but either way, even if it doesn’t work, it was advertised without the DAC anyway… so reversed channels isn’t end of the world. IMO. Maybe this was an RMAed unit they had left over.
I was kinda surprised when you found that big of an issue with the dac internally, as I thought it wasn’t as good as some of the dacs I have heard, but it wasn’t that bad lol. Also check for polarity and phase issues as well if you can
I just get artifact noises from USB… So I’ll say the internal DAC is actually busted. Works kind of through digital/spdif with reversed channels… but there might be other issues.
wait… that was just windows settings… working now. =P
… but still reversed.
Welp, at least you figured out what was the reason for the price, and the dac was something you weren’t even planning to get or use, so I guess no harm done (unless you really wanted that dac)
lol. yeah. not a big deal. I never really had any intention of ever using it, TBH.
Now back to ABing with the wiring reversed from the Topping D90 so the channels are the same… now it’s very hard to discern any differences flipping the switch to go back and forth. Pretty much identical to my ears. So assuming you got the DAC without reversed channel issue, you can be assured, it’s a solid DAC. lol
