TH-X00/TR-X00/E-MU Teak/Denon biodynamic general discussion

I understand OCD as I have some OCD tendencies that overlap with my ADHD. But the thing to know is that the pad change by itself is no good without the Lawton driver damping mod. If you do 1, you have to do the other…otherwise the treble is unbalanced and the mids get recessed into oblivion.

Are you saying that if i do the tuneup but keep the fostex stock pads it will sound like poop?

No, but I’m saying that If you want to change the pads, the driver damping mod is definitely necessary. The damping mod sounds good with stock pads, but a lot of Th-x00 owners dislike the small ear cavity in the stock pads, so most opt to swap to ZMF Ori or Eikon pads…but without that driver damping mod it just doesn’t sound as good.

Preach brother.

Just to clarify… I havent ordered these yet and this is just a photo James sent me… but if I do keep them and buy the cable I’ll leave a comparison for sure :+1:

Yeah okay will do… I’m still early in my decision making process but a part of me prefers the dt770 250 over these :man_shrugging:

No problem. I will probably just order one. Haven’t heard the DT 770, but I would like to. I love my 177Xs. They are my cans at work.

They do pop up on ebay sometimes for reasonable prices… 770s are great but maybe your 177x is an upgrade from that? I haven’t heard I’m just assuming lol

I agree with this 100%. I’d say the Lawton driver mod effects the high frequencies the most. They sound less harsh and more smooth with the mod.

I think this is dependent upon the pads you choose. I did not find the attenuation rings helped that much, and I personally don’t use them with my aftermarket pads, but you could very well be 100% right with the pads you chose.

I find that without other mods the attenuation rings HELP to keep the stock bass (it will still be a bit different, but less so than without).

Again, THIS exactly. I do not enjoy the comfort of the stock pads and wanted a complete over-ear fit. The Lawton mod made this possible, and in my opinion even improved upon the already amazing sound of the TR-X00.

I think there is no problem using more open/ round shaped pads. You can still put the attenuation rings in them and have the comfort of the bigger opening. I just find for me the bass loses its focus without them and the bass focus is already a bit muddy in the mahoganys. I can’t speak to the purplehearts or ebonys-I haven’t tried them.

this would be an improvement I could get behind… I saw the lawton stuff as a mod for 610s and 900s… but if it improves these as well I could explore that because I really do love the bass

In all my years of messing with headphones, I’ve realized its a combination of everything that contributes to the final sound. The angle of the driver to the ear, the distance of the driver to the ear, the cup material, the pad and foam material, perf or non perf, etc… It goes on and on.

You can just hope you get lucky and land on a combination that you enjoy.

The more I learn about audio gear the more I realize there really is no “best”. Everyone has different opinions about what they are chasing when it comes to audio. So trusting someone’s opinion on a message board may not be the best advise. Heck, if I was chatting with a version of myself that was 5 years younger, I’d probably be telling myself very different things than what I believe today.

Bottom line is… Don’t put too much stock in what anyone has to say on a message board, especially me! We’re all different and value different things. Everyone should make up their own mind for themselves. I do hope everyone chasing the perfect headphone eventually ends up being satisfied with something. It just so happens that my Lawton modded TR-X00’s are the best thing I’ve heard so far. I hope all of you guys end up finding your ideal headphone.

Like I just said, don’t put too much stock in what I have to say. Personally, I’m treble sensitive. I can get ringing in my ears listening to headphones that are more treble heavy. I know reviewers that adore treble and equate it to clarity and detail retrieval.

Well my friend turns out I’m in the exact same boat as you… too much treble makes my tinnitus worse

Well then, I’d have to say the Lawton driver mod would not be a bad thing to try.

I’m on this hunt for a nice bass head headphone but seems like they all have crazy treble… frustrating

Nighthawk gang lol. The suede pads really give it a super nice bass response with reduced treble
