TH-X00/TR-X00/E-MU Teak/Denon biodynamic general discussion

Oh no doubt. What I meant was instead of mounting the included cup dampening with the 3M adhesive I would try it out first and just use some bluetack to hold in place for testing. If I liked it I would mount it properly.

A small update on the dekoni X00 lambskin pads, they are great on the DT 770 250ohm. They fix like 85% of the sibilance and donā€™t seem to hurt anything else.

@PapaEmeritus what is shipping like from Lawton? I ask because I bought the tune up diy kit on Friday but still havenā€™t gotten tracking from him. Am I just worrying over nothing?

When I have purchased cups from Mark, it usually takes about a week to receive them. He goes through and does a final polish on them before they go out. Iā€™ve made many orders from Mark, heā€™s 100% trustworthy. You have nothing to worry about. Just be patient.

Cool. Thanks for the help and convincing me to try the Lawton mod. Before this thread I was always sceptical because I had seen so many reviews say it make Fostex headphones sound down right neutral and that is not what I want.

Also another question, are the different types of cups (type 1, type 2, etc.) Just different woods or do they come with specific tuning like foam.

The types are grouped in how they change the sound I think (also the quality of wood as well)

Yup, and types 4 and 5 are your more traditional tone woods found in the manufacture of instruments.

Some gorgeous wood there. Canā€™t wait till mine arrive.

Which cups did you order? Are you trying to increase, decrease or change the bass?

Thanks.

I went with Marbled East Indian Rosewood, which is a traditional tone wood (also reminiscent of a classical guitar I used to own).

I like that the Tune-Up adds neutrality to the Foster drivers, so Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll be happy with whatever coloration the rosewood adds.

Iā€™ll post pictures when I receive them.

Now weā€™re getting down to it arenā€™t we? Per the Drop lineup, you can already tell that the wood choice is very important to the final sound. Mark allows you to take that choice into your own hands and not only allows you modify the tone of the headphone but choose the aesthetic of the headphone cups.

I believe all the sound dampening material is the same in the cups, but youā€™d have to speak to Mark about that. I do believe he has changed what the material is made of over time. Itā€™s been the same in all of mine. If you also purchase the tune up kit with upgrade cups, he reduces the price since the cups already contain sound dampening material. You just get the parts to mod the driver.

If you want my opinion, if youā€™re going with your first mod, go with a level 5 wood. The woods have different densities and thatā€™s what causes the variation in sound. Not to mention, the more dense the wood, the heavier the cups will be. Thereā€™s a big difference between the weight of my marbled ebony and my quilted maple. Also, the Lawton cups are almost twice the size of the originals!

They stick out a fair bit more than you expect lol

Yes, I prefer the size of the stock cups, but the Lawton cups sound better. PERIOD.
