To my knowledge so far there hasn’t been any reports of issues with L4.
Per Theiaudio… The L4 is the successor to the L3.
Yes, The L4 has stock, an inset pin connector like the L3 custom.
L3 has a QDC 2-pin, L5 and L4 are flush-fit. The design is different, so the flaw isn’t present.
Thieaudio have stated that they have been testing all their IEMs since there were issues that were unacceptable with inconsistencies with the Legacy 3.
Well I’ve bit the bullet and ordered a set of universal L4s with custom L/R shells and faceplates. I put in quite a bit of time this evening trying to find pictures I liked, and shells that paired with the pictures. My expectations going in, I’m hoping for a new favorite IEM. The best IEMs I’ve heard are the L5 and Moondrop B2, so I think these have a fair chance of competing if not overturning those.
Defective unit maybe?
Wow brutal.
I don’t think so. I think he was just in a bad mood because he was hungry and wasted the first video.
He’s right about them being clear. They are tuned very similar to the Clairvoyance. Except for the new DD, (which is an obvious improvement over previous Legacy DD’s) the L4 is using the same BA drivers as the other Legacy IEMs. I personally don’t remember the L4 sound stage being smaller or larger than the other Legacy IEMs.
I think what’s really going on is that Zeos prefers a warm sound signature. The L5 is much warmer sounding than the L4. The L4 is clearer and more clinical/technical than the L5. Personally I prefer a warmer sound signature as well, but most people are looking for accurate representations of their music, and the L4 does a great job at that. The L5 makes everything sound warm/soft and more enjoyable for those that want that.
As for accessories… He’s absolutely right. You’re getting accessories you would expect to be getting with a $1,000.00 IEM. It is completely unnecessary, but for those wanting to get the most for your money, the accessories are insane.
Zeos unfortunately did not go into detail about the included cable. The cable is one of the nicest cables that comes with any IEM.
So… for those wanting an incredible package for 200 bucks. The L4 is incredible value. The sound signature is subjective and I think I understand now what Zeos prefers.
Can anyone compare L4 to Fiio’s FH7? I cant decide between fh7 with custom eartips and custom L4. I like the FH7’s sound, but with custom eartips the price is almost double. I know the sound is not twice that good, but they will keep some value since they are universals…
Thanks!
I can. I would not buy the FH7 when the FH3 exists. Better yet the FD5. The FD5 is my favorite Fiio IEM.
I just compared the L4 and L5 back to back. Not sure what Zeos is talking about. It’s not day and night differences between the two. I’ll sum up the differences I hear. The soundstage is about the same. The L5 has meatier/heftier bass and has smoother, more rolled off treble. The L4 sounds more detailed, has more extended and present treble.
I want to add that I am using Spinfit silicone tips and Zeos is using Dekoni foam tips which I do not recommend for critical listening.
Personally, the L5 fits me like a glove. The L4 is smaller and is about the size of the L3 (possibly the exact same shell shape).
I would try fd5, but they are not yet on the EU amazon. From what I read, they are quite different from FH7 in the sound signature. I like the FH7, maybe I will try FH3
but I am curious how would you compare them to L4?
Your impressions mirror my experience with both the L4 and L5. My kneejerk reaction to Zeos’ video is ‘what IEM is HE listening to?’, but in the past a lot of his impressions (including on units that I have sent to him) have deviated considerably from my own. The Legacy 4 remains my favorite of the Legacy series that I’ve owned (never had the L9), although they’re all admirable in their own right.
I have the FD5 and prefer the it to just about everything. The Thieaudio Monarch and the FD5 are my personal front runners.
They are just about as different as different can be as IEMs go. They are fantastic compliments to one another because of their differences.
Long time ago I stopped paying attention to what Zeos says. Lately I don’t watch his videos but since I’m interested in thieaudio lineup I saw L5 and Clairvoyance so called reviews.
Come on honestly can anyone call those videos reviews?
in L4 video all he talks about, they are bad, I don’t like them, no soundstage and overkill package.
In L5 he is like best ever (omg another one)…
In Clairvoyance the same + soundstage… 30-60 min ramble about nothing, not a single useful information. I don’t believe single word he’s saying
… I’ll stop here
All good points.
I really enjoy Zeos’ reviews. He has quite the personality. He has a wealth of knowledge due to the amount of gear he’s been able to play with, but he has personal preferences as we all do and those preferences rear their ugly head many times during his videos.
He’s also not that technically informative as someone like Resove/Andrew is from Headphones.com.
In his GoldPlanar GL2000 video review, this was apparent when he said when he was describing what he was hearing with the GoldPlanar with DMS, DMS explained that what he was hearing was simply compression. Zeos replied… I don’t care what it’s called, I love it! Most of us don’t want our headphones adding additional compression to our music beyond what the mastering engineers have already applied to the final recordings. It destroys dynamic rage which is essential for certain genres of music.
To each their own.
Can you compress audio with a transducer? I figured that’d take some sort of DSP (which is probably not in the GL2000).
@Resolution
What Andrew does is pure poetry…
Zeos concerned, myself I would rather believe someone who’s not in it for the money, patreon, private chat with the fee, affiliate links, yard sale and so on.
Also since you mentioned FH5 earlier in the thread and the way you described it along with the music I’m into as well made me wanna pull the trigger on FD5 right away. I checked the head-fi FD5 page and again certain members proved once again they can WRITE… Now I’m just itching to part with $300
Hell I ordered custom shell L4 without hearing UIEM first and based on few reviews and I know I made a good choice. I don’t believe any reviewer blindly, it’s the collective concensus what matters to me.
Btw your L4+L5 pic is looking awesome.
Ha ha, thank you.
I have nothing to lose/gain in any of this. I’m a hobbyist and I love music. I work on a computer all day and can listen to music while I work. I’ve gone way overboard buying IEMs because I can afford it and I enjoy the chase of finding my personal ideal IEM.
If I can help anyone with my personal reactions of any of the IEMs I own, I’m happy to help. I’m into it all.
As for the FD5, I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I do. I thought hybrids were always going to be superior to single DD IEMs but I was wrong. The speed, smoothness and natural timbre of the FD5 is fantastic. The cable is perfect. I’d never remove it. It’s a fantastic package especially for it’s price. I haven’t heard the Zen or the Illumination. I’m not interested in the Illumination (not a big Moondrop fan) but the Zen interests me a lot now after the FD5. I’m looking forward to BGGAR’s reactions since he has it in hand.
I’m 100% with you on this one, the only thing is I cannot afford too many acquisitions atm so I’ll settle for Clair + FD5 in the next few months and hopefully that will be it for some good while.
