I knew already that the Tin Hifi P1 is hard to drive, especially on the to with portables. As I never use my IEMs without DAC/Amps I thought what is the problem? But that hard? My Topping NX4 was not able to play it loud, neither my xDuoo XD-05. Only my Onkyo DAC-HA200 has still some reserves when I play loud and the combination of a FiiO A5 amp attached to a Hidizs Sonata DAC cable adapter worked well. My FiiO X1 worked ok. Of course there was no problem using the IEM in desktop mode. Both a Meyer amp and a JDS Lab Atom could drive it easily.
The sound was as expected: No bass to write home about but clean mids and highs. In my first test round I listened to my standard test tracks for several hours and it was not fatiguing in any way, bass and drum heavy tracks sound thin of course, but piano and violin on classical tracks sound very good, the soundstage is ok for me but not very wide. The fit in my so to say normal ears is as good as with other IEMs I have (my BGVP DMG for instance is rounder and therefore fits better), the cable is not top notch but can be easily replaced by a tighter braided cable. The leather case is a worthless gimmick and only helps selling the device, I will not use it anyway.
And worth noting: No electrical shocks, neither in portable mode nor attached to an desktop amp.
E1DA highly recommended. be careful when you use as volume needs to be set low initially in the HPTOY app. also a FULLY Balanced Headphone 2.5mm cable is mandatory or the E1DA will be damaged if you use with any 2.5mm to 3.5mm etc adapter. HPTOY app can load an EQ setting for the P1 too.
You might need to check if your phone or DAP volume is turned down. Iâm using the NX4 to power them while writing this and it gets plenty loud on high gain at 11 oâclock (max is like 5 oâclock). Also I use the xDuoo xd-05 for around the house listening and it is way more than enough. Like I said, check that your source isnât turned down or try setting it to line out if you can.
I first checked my phone (a LG G5): It was/is at maximum volume. I repeated my listening tests with all my amps: Onkyo ok, XDuoo and Topping not loud enough.
I just ordered a FiiO Q1 Mark II and a few cheap balanced cables. Maybe this will solve my volume problems.
You may want to cancel that order unless you have another reason for the Q1 mkII and those cables. The xDuoo xd-05 is 500mW/channel. The Q1 mkII is about 150mW/channel balanced. If the xd-05 isnât enough then the Q1 mkII shouldnât be either.
Do your P1s sound right? If itâs not getting loud enough for you with 500mW/channel then they could be broken in some way maybe? Or maybe your just deaf (I hope thatâs not the case). I doubt you want to spend the money but the ifi micro iDSD black label is 4000mW/channel (and $600) if you want the most powerful portable amp/dac.
I am not sure whether the volume problem is a simple question of wattage:
My FiiO X1 sounds decently loud and its specs are 100 mW for 16 Ohm and THD 1 %, 65 mW for 32 Ohm and THD 1 % and only 8 mW for 300 Ohm and THD 1 %. That gives a considerable weaker power stage than every other amp I have.
My FiiO Q1 arrived. And it produces a higher volume than the Topping NX4 or my xDuuo XD-05. And it is by far the smallest and lightest of them all. I only whish it had an USB-C connector instead of that old fashioned micro USB.
Iâm guessing that there was a gain issue somewhere in the chain. If the unit wasnât getting proper volume, it would make sense. It could be the source file or input being a quiet song, or it could be some strange issue where the output to the dac was being volume limited or something like that. Power does not equal gain, so you can sometimes have amps that are more powerful but cannot produce as much volume as another amp
Thanks for the answer. I still find it strange though since I personally use both of those amps with my P1s and they get plenty loud, so I wonder what makes his not get as loud?
But the chain in all cases was as short as possible: LG G5 as USB transport. Because the different DAC/Amps do not have the same USB connector, the cables were different, but the music files were always the same. The shortest chain is of course with a dedicated DAP: My old FiiO X1 gives me more volume than I can stand for long, and my far âbetterâ DAP, a Pioneer XDP-100R, does not give my enough volume. And not only with the Tin P1, I therefore do not use it that much anymore.
