šŸ”¶ Vokyl Erupts

I donā€™t feel thereā€™s much difference between balanced and single ended. But as far as I recall they sound better with the new cable, but considering that I cannot A/B them it might be pure bias.

Damn, now Iā€™m curious to see what happens if you remove the wool. Maybe then we could get the mythical z sample. Also, does the board clip onto anything to hold it in place? Thanks for all your help with this.

The small pcb is held by two screws. Same 1/16ā€ hex bit.

Did removing the filling help make them sound any better?

I removed the filling only for the picture, in case someone was curious. I reassembled it the same way it originally was, only mod was the pinout.

Vokyl Team:

Cables that do not follow the pinout shown in the below linked PDF will not work with the Erupt. The following TRRS, CTIA configuration is compatible and the best way to ensure the correct functionality. The Erupt absolutely had to be designed with this standard to avoid mic interference and user error. Standard mono jacks will not work with The Erupt, as using a mono jack will result in shorting out the audio in the right cup. You can check out our PDF diagram here.

I have looked for such a cable and every one I find only has a single end connection, not a dual end.
I think weā€™re kind of screwed here and are going to have to Mod these ourselves like Elira did.

Looks like they designed these for console gaming and not for PC gaming or for any of the audio enthusiasts who would pay the premium for a headset such as this.

Hypothetically, could you make an adapter for each cup that goes from the weird wiring in the cups to a normal dual mono or stereo jack? That way you can use the original cables (moreso for the mic) or more common aftermarket cables?

Also, here is how both mics measure. Graphs sent to me by Vokyl.

Was his sample supposed to be different somehow?

Yes, it was one of multiple prototypes they sent for review. Final version is supposedly based on that prototype but not identical.

Interesting. Thanks.

Based on initial feedback, which seems to be almost universally underwhelming, Iā€™m guessing that Iā€™ll just end up selling these and getting a good desktop mic for my gaming needs.

What? Show me the review that said that. There was one initial impression that said it was dark sounding, but was later proved to be an outlier, everyone else saying they were neutral. No one else has said anything negative, one going so far as to say itā€™s the best headphone in its price range. Talk about irrational, jeez.

I didnā€™t say negative. I said underwhelming. A lot of what I have seen so far could be summed up as ā€œthese are fine.ā€ I wanted god tier soundstage, that was the whole draw of these for me. A few backers are reporting that itā€™s perfectly average in that area. Of course Iā€™ll try them myself, but theyā€™ll have to do something special and unique to them for me to justify keeping them. Hardly irrational, I just donā€™t want another ā€œgoodā€ set of headphones lying around.

Again, show me the posts saying itā€™s just ā€œfineā€ or ā€œunderwhelmingā€. Meany commentators have stated that it has the best vocal/instrument separation and imaging way beyond its price range, something meany $1k+ headphone still cant do correctly. Crazy wide soundstage is going to affect how accurately you can locate things. The hd800 is a good example of that. It being so wide sounding compromises the precision in locating things like instruments, even if its separation is very good. This is not what you want out of a headset, and to be honest, a headphone in general. Sorry, but your skepticism is purely irrational as you have no evidence to claim.

No one said it had ā€œaverageā€ soundstage either. Do you ever get tired lying to yourself?

You got me. I pulled it all out of my ass despite the fact I paid for them and have no reason to want anything but a good end product. Just because Iā€™m not giving you links to appease you doesnā€™t mean I didnā€™t read such feedback.

Your salt-tinged comments read pretty obnoxiously and Iā€™m done engaging.

Nice edits to make your comments appear less combative though lol.

And again, you have no evidence that you didnā€™t pull it out your ass. Do you understand the purpose of evidence? I can only guessā€¦

Here, Iā€™ve found one. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32932881983.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.64656b95aUgRcM&algo_pvid=ae1fb0fd-a607-4218-ae7e-2a3b87af4738&algo_expid=ae1fb0fd-a607-4218-ae7e-2a3b87af4738-1&btsid=8fc8052d-0fa2-48c0-b570-196ab90e603c&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_3,searchweb201603_55

the NC has too much compression and doesnā€™t really do itā€™s job very well. It actually introduces noise to the mic which isnā€™t what you want.

Omni sounds more natural and should be the only thing you use. Then again there are freaks out there who donā€™t use Push-to-Talk. MONSTERS!!!
