What did you buy today? (Part 1)

what do you use for the RNHP? I currently have it set to middle and I’m at about 3 a’clock on the volume using the clears

I’m on high the full 4volt output, I think the RNHP is adjusted for the 4 volts balanced. I’m at about 10:30 on the volume.

But I’m curious if you find any benifit on medium. I haven’t tried mid on the RNHP. I know the Liquid Spark and Archel 2 both liked mid gain

Wait until you use the RNHP for a day or 2 then go back to the THX and see how long you can listen to it…lol

Gain can have an effect on sound? I was going on the knowledge that as long as theres significant headroom all is well…

I love how their DACs are the cheapest balanced DACs you’ll find (though a bit odd to set up I guess, and only SPDIF in, so options are limited), but the AMPs are all single ended.

You just want to be in the sweet spot for the amp, so you aren’t cranking it and risking distortion but not having lower volumes be louder than it should be so you don’t get into the range

Got it :ok_hand: that’s what I’ve been doing so all is well

It’s not quite that simple, especially if amps have gain switches.
Generally amps are not quite as linear at lower volume levels, so there is a sweet spot.
But more than that how a gain switch is implemented matters, Schiit amps for example tend to sound slightly better on high gain, because the amp has less feedback in that mode.
Transducers also have volume levels at which they perform better/worse.

Yet another consideration in the chain… love this hobby… I have the xd05+ so I’ll have to play around… I was going anywhere from 10 to 1 and I should be good

@giova05
when i was looking for suitable carts for the shiit i just stumbled over the denon. Don’t put that on the Rega! It has about 10 µm/mN and weighs 8,5g! Your Rega tonearm is too light for that.

Bought a new MacBook (13", Mid 2015, i5, 16 GB, 500GB SSD) to replace my slowly dying one. Probably not much of a pro-Apple forum, but it fits my needs and being in “eco system” of my phone, Apple Music, and Apple TV is nice. Built a PC in the past, just not much of a gamer to justify it at the moment.

Portability is also nice.

I had looked at the resonance evaluator on VinylEngine and it showed it was not ideal, but close enough. The Goldring 1006 you recommended ends up with about the same 12hz rating as well… at least according to their calculator.

Do you think using slightly heavier mounting screws would help in a situation like that? Maybe add a couple extra bolts. If cart is 9 grams, then according to their calculator it would be 11hz, which falls closer to ideal range.

Where did you find those RCAs? Been loking for short ones (that arent way expensive).

They were a bit stiff to start with and were pushing the Topping up, but as the Topping started weighing them down it sits nicely on top of the Atom now.

Bought one of these: _

It’s great!

The Denon really needs at least a 15g Tonearm, like a Technics, to sound decent. You could sandwich a weight between Cartridge and Headshel and lift the tonearm up accordingly. You can’t stick weight on top of the Tonearm. The Denon is very sensitive to the Headshel material an I would also sandwich a 1mm thick piece of wood between the weight and the Cart.
The Denon is a good Cart but it also needs a good and adjustable Preamp to really work. That’s the reason why I don’t really like it, because you need to invest a lot of money to actually make it sound good. Most of the good reviews of this cart were written by guys with an expensive Setup.
The Goldring isn’t as sensitive and works great with Rega and cheaper preamps in my experience. You should always take the dynamic resonance measurements with a grain of salt. I just recommend it because is more of a musical cartridge. There are some better compliance ones out there like 2M Blue but they are more on the neutral side unlike the Denon or Goldring.

cool, okay… yeah I was honestly not aiming for an MC cart anytime soon anyway. I’ll definitely keep it in mind. As far as the resonance is concerned, I think I’ll deal with it as I go along and try things… if it becomes an issue, I’ll look into ways of dealing with it or just return/sell whatever cart I have issues with… or potentially upgrade tonearm at some point. Just one step at a time really.

Getting a quality preamp is always a good investment in the future. I love the TRIGON VANGUARD II because it works basically with every Cart you can imagine. Have a look into the Manual.

The Denon just doesn’t reach it’s potential with a rega Arm at all. The Goldring will sound a lot better without if you don’t add weight. I honestly think the Ortofon MC Quintet Red is a better start into the MC World. The Compliance with Rega ist perfekt too @ 9hz. The RB 220 is good enough but you would need a quality preamp too.

Very nice, okay. Prices on that preamp aren’t too crazy either in used market. Thanks. I’ll definitely keep that one in mind for sure. Looks good. Thanks again for all the advice!

Have a look into the manual and you will know why I love it. Works great with MM too.
You can tweak everything to taste, calm the highs and fix channel unbalances.
