What did you watch today?

Initial D: Second Stage

It took a while (i do have other tv series i follow, and theres music to listen to, and life in general) but i’ve just finished of the last season of Star Trek The Next Generation… I think it was well worth the re-watch, and I even thought it was a bit of a shame that i didn’t have more episodes to go through…

Now i am about to start Deep Space 9, as i never watched that show when it originally aired. Then i thought Voyager would be nice to go through (that one i did watch most of the episodes when it was running). That would at least round up the “classic” star trek shows for my generation (im a bit too young to have watched the original series watching up).

Probably should have started this Star Trek voyage the moment the whole Covid-19 hit, so that i would have finished before most things return to normal… hopefully im to late for that

I’ve been contemplating on rewatching it again, but so far I haven’t pulled the trigger.

Recently I’ve (re)watched Californication and Mortal Kombat. MK was okay, they kind of gave it a Marvel stamp. Action and FX were on point, combat was exactly what I would’ve expected from a movie that’s based on a video game with fatalities and brutalities. But the pacing was way too quick for me and the story arc didn’t really pull me in. They could’ve done a better job on that part.

Tenet (on HBO Max)

One of the best action sci-fi movies I’ve seen since Edge of Tomorrow. Excellent mind bending time travel sci-fi!

JAV “My friend’s Mother”

The Nevers on HBO has actually turned out to be entertaining, with some clever plot twists thrown in. It’s not taking itself too seriously which is actually adding to the “fun” factor. It’s not high science fiction but it’s kept me looking forward to next week’s episode so far.

Something decent on Sunday night, it’s been a while.

I finally got around to watching Godzilla vs Kong. Find me in the Alps that was the most entertaining movie I’ve seen in a long time! The human plot was kept to a minimum and the monster fights were just devine, exquisite, sublime.

It kind of reminds me of the new Doom games. You know why you’re there. The movie knows why your there. Just cut through the bull shit and get the the good stuff. There’s also a strong sense that the people making it are just as big of fans as the people watching it.

I’ll definitely be buying it on blu-ray.

Yes! Nothing better than a good monsters vs robots movie. I think this should be it’s own official sub-genra of sci-fi. The fun I had watching this movie reminded me of the first time I watched Pacific Rim.

Wow, I was totally on the opposite side of the spectrum. I thought there was way too much human plot and not nearly enough GvK. Also I thought their take on MechaG was awful. After I finished watching GvK I watched Godzilla vs. Megalon and found myself way more entertained…

Compared to the one from 2014 and KotM, the human plot was minimal. What was there was honestly pretty bad, but there was enough monster focused screen time (not specifically fights) that it felt like the human stuff was secondary to me. Also the fights were VERY good imo. The animation for Kong and Godzilla was perfect. There was just so much personality in the way they moved.

Though I must admit, Godzilla vs Megalon is pique entertainment.

With this I agree, I just wanted more than what they gave.

What they should do is just make a 1-1.5 hour movie that’s kind of like final wars were it is just fight after fight with essentially no plot at all. No one ever cares about the human plot anyway so save money on actors and put it into more fight scenes.

Cocaine cowboys kings of miami. 8/20 because no atmos/vision.

Been off work for the past few weeks (summer vacation) but not had time (ironically) for too many movies…

Watched “Nobody” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7888964/) a few weeks back, and really enjoyed it. Simple but effective, and just the kind of movie i like.

Then i watched “The tomorrow war” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9777666/) and found it a bit boring. There where plenty of action, but it never got me hooked on the story and protagonists. Some good effects, but i just thought it lacked something to draw me in.

Last night i watched “the big short” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596363/)
Missed this one when it was released, but got recommended it by a friend a few weeks ago. I really liked this one. Steve Carell did an surprisingly good job i thought (or rather im just used to his more comedic roles), but all the cast did a good job and the story was more interesting than i would have thought by reading the storyline description. It is based on the housing marked collapse/financial crisis of 2007/8 where we follow a few that saw the writing on the wall and was trying to capitalize on it. It has good storytelling, and its both interesting and funny. Not much special effects or “big sound” though
