Funny story, I found my old college dictionary cleaning out the attic a few months ago (yes, I went to college before the internet). Flipping through it I found a memory of days gone by…a pot leaf pressed between the pages. It was right “M,” on the page covering “mariculture” to “marital.” That bit of plant matter is over a quarter century old and came with me on two cross country moves. Can’t do that with Google!

Both these amps are made in China is it possible they all come from same factory?
It could, but IDK if we can know yet. SMSL did manufacture stuff for other companies before, so it could be that they are making the 887 for monoprice, but who knows
I only say this because even the SMSL looks like a copy of 789.
Eh, I mean kinda, but not as much as the monoprice 887. It more looks like a fostex hp-a4 design with toggle switches instead of buttons
Good example is subwoofer baskets looking all the same coming out of China. I don’t care only thing is the monoprice version looks nicer. But I went with the original 789.

It’s a quality product no doubt. I just wish they made them look different. Yes SMSL has the toggles and nice shiny exterior kinda like that one the most.
I might go with the smsl if it comes out before the monoprice, and it seems like the smsl is coming out in late October, so that’s cool

see, I wish I’d known about Smsl because I would have waited but now im stuck. Only good thing is the 789 is tried and true to its performance.
Oh boy, I can’t say I regret cancelling my massdrop order on the Aune S7 Pro or the fact that I missed the 789. Hopefully this time around there will be some availability. Otherwise it’s just going to be another case of “Amp that everyone reveres and recommends but is never in stock”.
On a positive note, at least this time around I can look at the retailers website instead of being blueballed by Drop has ended / Request this drop again. Or waiting months and months after that fact that I’ve ordered cough Tin P1 cough only to have it forcibly cancelled by their assbackwards system.
Honestly at this point I will only order something from massdrop if it can be shipped out within 2 days (already stocked and available). Their other drops just don’t make sense to me

Agreed, I got really burned on both my P1 and S7 orders as both were delayed and any and all communication was far below what anyone would deem accepatble, or for that matter, professional.

I almost bought a watch yesterday from Massdrop (not saying “Drop”) thinking it was a great deal. Shipping date was November. A little googling and I found it for $1 more with free next day shipping.

I’m on the same boat. Will get the first batch of the “Drop” named 789.
And while “bigger” THX chips obviously sound interesting. We at least very well know the 789 is pretty much perfect. It’s absolutely transparent and has a perfect output impedence. The new monoprice are still a gamble before objective reviews.
I’m a bit “sad” to maybe not having the cuting edge tech at the same price. But I’m VERY happy to have the closest thing to a perfect headphone amp coming my way. The wait is killing me !!! Will also be my first balanced desk amp.
The only real point they may improve is sheer power. You can’t be cleaner than clean, at least not to human ears.
That aside those headphones are REALLY interesting. Can’t wait for 1570 and 1070 reviews. I was really close to pull the trigger on a pair of Aiva’s last week. But the BLON and those made me reconsider… I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. God I hate waiting, I’m like a child.

but the 887 came out better than the 789…even if it’s only by a bit. 
I went with the monoprice 788 and it was enough for me, at a certain point its about practical use, features etc. The music!
