Monolith has a THX 887 coming outā¦and ASR review shows it to be superior to the 789, just not enough to warrant buying the 887 to replace it, if you have one already.

Thereās nothing to spill. Iām just having little fun. For all we know is that the same factory making the 789 makes the 887. So as far as ASR goes I donāt buy into his whole thing about numbers making a piece of electronics good. Iāve learned to listen then jump the hype train.
well, itās a balancing act and as audio is, itās subjective. however, the testing shows the numbers of the 887 are better than the 789, even if itās marginal.
letās hope THX isnāt pulling any schenanigans, it would be bad PR.

What can actually be done to the circuits inside to make thx different from one to the next? The 789 board looks very simplistic. When I look at pictures of the board I canāt figure out where they get 6 watts of power, theres nothing in there. Iāll say regular amp has big caps and triods( not sure of the spelling). So how much can one company do in a short time. Did monoprice get into R&D for this amp.

I suspect all will be revealed once the 887 is out.
Man, after reading through all of this, Iām really excited for these headphones. Monoprice, bringing excellent, affordable audio to the masses once again.

I see the price of a brand new 789 is not as high on eBay. Wondering once monoprice comes out this will stop people from buying to sell at higher cost. Remember seeing one for close to a thousand at one time.
Over on the Avexchange subreddit the 789 is down to pretty much retail price for barely used or BNIB units.

I think the biggest difference with Monoprice Desktop compared to the Massdrop 789 is that the 789 just feeds the signal through, whereas the Monoprice does analog to digital, before converting the signal from digital back to analog again. 789 may be a better option for purists if you want to select which DAC you want to use to feed it.
EDIT: Oh wait I think I am talking about a different ampā¦ whoops.
