Ordered the dual Burson V5i. I’m so happy to have bought the XD-05 plus. I use it everyday mostly with my TH-X00 Ebony but also with the Lcd2c. This thing has improved my music experience a lot. Even though I also got a DX160 Dap I use the latter with Iems and the former almost exclusively with over ears. Maybe in the future I’ll get the iFi micro dsd black label but only if it really outperforms the xDuoo.
I totally agree, the XD-05 plus is such a great device (mine is also with the Burson V5i) and I bring it with me everytime I’m out somewhere or traveling. (I travel every week as my office is 360 km away).
The iFi micro dsd black label is really nice, but the BT add-on to the XD-05 plus is something I can’t live without. So the iFi has to get that in the next upgrade for me to consider it and the sound improvement has to be stellar also.
How to find our you are just pure hifi noooob? Ordered two burson v5i thinking those should be like pair of single opamps, but getting two duals and trying to make it work in you xduoo.
I do like my Nighthawks more with v5i tough.
I enjoy the XD-05 as a little travel powerhouse when I’m going on work related trips, but the usb is fvcking worthless. Unstable to the point its basically broken. Only use it for optical now. Basically a brick. RIP.
What about the BT solution?
I ONLY use it with BT and that works flawless; and I charge the two elements 1-2 times a month, so no hazzle re battery life.
Repost because I messed up the correct place to reply
How do I know if i mounted the V5i correctly.
I know that the „Notch“ gives me the orientation of the chip so that i can properly determine which pin is which. But how do I know the orientation of the socket on the PCB?
I see that there are outlines on the PCB that show „Notches“ as well but is this an Industrie standard or is there a proper way to know the correct orientation on the PCB?
Maybe @donjklassen could help as well?
There is a notch on the socket itself usually.
These things are not always obvious, not all op-amps have notches any more a lot just have a barely visible dot next to pin 1.
Hey, thanks for the quick response!!
The V5i has both so i know where the pin 1 is located. The PB has a drawn outline with a Notch. Is this drawn Notch on the PCB usual?
It’s common and usually correct, but the socket itself usually has an indicator.
Hey thanks to all!!
Let me reassemble really quick…
I have two XD05+ at the moment so I am looking forward to A-B test the V5i.
Not sure if my ears are „trained“ enough to determine the difference or if I even have the right vocabulary to describe what i hear.
But I happily share my experience… now that I am confident I placed the OpAmp correctly on the PCB.
that’s pretty awesome… curious to hear what think
took me awhile to pick up on it and I found it to be a very subtle but pleasant difference
So besides the placebo a new 60€ OpAmp has the differences are immediately audible.
But a huge huge disclaimer, this is the really really first impression and only an impression and no thorough experience !!!
But what i think i hear immediately is that voices got more body and highs are a little more calm.
This is quit audible in the song „No sanctuary here“ by Chris Jones. I am listening with Dt 1990 Pro (analytical Pads / Tidal FLAC).
The richer body of the voices is especially noticeable in the background chorus and the more calm highs is most noticeable in the less piercing tambourine sounds.
This first impression makes me really exited!!!
Subtle but pleasant is quit accurate.
I think having the ability to A-B test helps to determine the differences a little quicker.
I am EXITED!!!
nice! yeah I think its pretty rare for someone to have two amps like that which is a gigantic advantage… I didn’t a-b at all (don’t with tubes either… too much of a pain lol) but I look forward to a follow up as well… glad youre enjoying it
Tbh I hear no difference except for that cracking when turning volume knob which I find anoying a bit. But I might be able to heare some having double stack and A/B like you have.
Hey,
I really think having a double stack does the trick.
But I as well have the feeling that the headphone pairing makes quit the difference with how noticeable the changes of the V5i are.
I am testing the V5i with the DT 1990 Pro as well as with the 58X. The DT 1990 responded quit well and noticeable to the V5i (even though a always thought the DT´s weren’t AMP picky at all). The 58X on the other hand barely sound any different.
I will give the V5i a little more time and trie to test them as thoroughly as I can to minimize the placebo effect as good as I can…
V5i Review
Disclaimer: I am still a newbie in the audiophile world. Therefore take all of my impression with a grain of salt. I tried to only list things I actually heard. But music is such an emotional thing that I am certain that my emotions as well as my psyche played a hugh role in my impressions and distorted my assessments is some way or form.
I did my V5i + XD-05 plus tests with the DT 1990 Pro (analytical Pads) and HD58X. Using ≥44.1khz FLACs.
I will describe my experience mainly in comparison with specific headphone, because I don’t trust my expertise at this point to give generalized opinions.
Overall Impression:
DT 1990 Pro: Responding really well and quit a lot to the V5i. - V5i is an absolute worthy upgrade with this pairing.
HD 58X: Responded way less and the listed changes are a lot more subtle than the ones listed using the DT 1990 Pro.
The most notable changes from the OPA1612 to the V5i overall is a widening in soundstage, dynamic and an improved separation (!).
Low:
Using the DT 1990 Pro:
The lows are quit great! They get elevated a little bit by getting ever so slightly more defined/ detailed. I would say this increase in the lows is less by a simple gain in dB but more in a gain of „punch“. The lows have more force and energy as well es extension. The 1990 Pro really benefit from this quality in the lows, the 58X on the other hand got even more warm without really gaining audible extension.
To help illustrate what I hear I would compare the changes to the lows to what happens when you change the pads on the DT 1990 from the analytical Pads to the balanced Pads, only way less extreme. The changes are quit linear to the once audible with the pad swap. If the Lows increase by an ordinary number of 10 with the balanced pads the V5i increased the lows by 2.
But it needs to be sad that the pad swop doesn’t provide the gain in „punch“ and detail I hear with the V5i.
For me the balanced Pads on the DT 1990 emphasized the Lows way to much, which brought a bit to much attention to them for my liking. The analytical Pads on the other hand miss the balance between lows and highs for me — but really not by much and only after I heard the V5i— but after hearing the DT 1990 Pro with the V5i it was obvious to me that the sound with the V5i is way more balanced than with the OPA1612. The highs are calmer and the lows are just ever so slightly elevated. It still totally sounds like the DT 1990 with analytical Pads, just a tad more „musical“ and less like its „critical listening“ time.
Mid:
Unsinn HD58X:
The V5i bring an overall better separation. This is especially noticeable in the Midds and low Midds. The V5i separate the vocals of Chris Jones in „No Sancturary Here“ noticeable better from the background chorus than the OPA1612 did.
Regarding the general sound of the 58X. Even though I prefer the timber of the vocals with the V5i even more, the tamed highs — that work absolutely perfect with the DT 1990 — makes the 58X even warmer sounding. That personally warmes the 58X to much for my liking what lets me generally prefer the OPA1612 over the V5i for the 58X. But this really is mostly because the 58X were on the edge of „to warm“ for me from the beginning.
Using DT1990Pro:
The midds stay quit consistent between the OPA1612 and the V5i. The timber of especially male vocals get a little more textured and „Live-like “. But the Midds in general show the least changes between the OPA1612 and the V5i. They do benefit from the overall better separation of the V5i though.
High:
Using DT1990Pro:
The highs are just ever so slightly less piercing. Not by much but the V51 tame the „Beyer-Peak“ by a perfect amount. The detail and precision in the highs stay unchanged. That makes the DT 1990Pro even more enjoyable — and I honestly really loved the DT 1990 as they were.
I had the chance to do a thorough listening session comparing the DT 1990 Pro to the Sundara, DT 880 600ohm, DT 1770, Meze Empyrean / 99 Classics, and some other headphone. Nothing came close to the DT 1990 for me… ok the Empyrean are on another level and became my „endgame“ goal. But even if i would own the Empyrean the DT 1990 would be on my head all the time as well, just because they are so different and still absolutely great in there own way even compared to the Empyrean (and I know the conflicting statement of mine that the 58X is to warm for me and still I am absolutely wowed by the Empyrean).
The changes described by me are quit well audible in the Hi-Hat sounds at the beginning of the Song „I Want You Back“ covered by Lake Street Dive - fun machine. Or in the tambourine sound in the middle of „No Sancturary Here“ by Chris Jones.
To describe the changes in the highs with even less expertise:
The highs just feel more emotional. There really isn’t a big change to the highs, its not even a small change it is more a feeling. Even though I really really like the 1990 Pro highs they kept me ever so lightly an the edge of my seat with the OPA1612. Listening to the 1990 Pro using the V5i on the other hand let me relax and fall back into my well cushioned wing chair. The V5i highes helped me feel the emotions of the music I am listening instead of forcing me to concentrate and critical listen to what the fingerstyle playing guitarist is doing in the background.
If I would only own the OPA1612 I bet I would adjust to the sound and would be just as happy but after hearing the V5i paired with the 1990 Pro I am super exited to get even deeper into this audiophile world.
