I’m pretty meh with this one - I do have the 80 Ohm version but not my cup o tea. Selling or taking to school for the kids.

So I did some pad swapping on these today. I compared stock pads to Dekoni X00 sheepskin and Accessory House Global (AHG) lambskin pads. It seems that both of these pads adds a bit to the lower mid range, warming up the sound a bit which I find nice. The Dekoni pads are the best for reducing the sharp treble but they also seem to reduce the sub-bass a bit. Overall they are good but not really my preferred choice, especially since they reduce the sound stage a bit as well. The AHG pads are what I’m going to be using going forward. These reduce the treble, but not as much, so it could still possibly be a problem for some (only those who are properly treble sensitive imo). They don’t reduce the sub-bass any and still warm up the lower mid range nicely. The AHG pads are also the most comfortable by far. They are deeper than the stock pads and have a larger ear hole than the Dekoni pads. The sound stage is also comparable to the stock pads (possibly a touch smaller but nothing that I would call noticeable for most people). The imaging with all the pads is unchanged as far as I could tell.

In conclusion, if you want a more comfortable, warmer, and less sharp DT-770, get the AHG pads. The Dekoni pads are still good but they are expensive and need to be special ordered via email, so I cant really recommend. The AHG pads are ~$30 on amazon.

Been reading all sorts of mods on these bitches
may need alter and try out again.

Man - change of heart here. Was running off the THX SP 200. Just pulled em back out and ran off Bifrost and Asgard and they are’t as terrible. Stage is good
treble is up front but not like the THX
was too much.

What is required to swap the pads out for the Mr Headphone’s Alphas or the AHGs?

I don’t have these yet, just ordered a set of 80ohms, and want to just listen to them first in all the configurations I can muster. Plus, return policy if Mount Beyer is too much for me.

Also any good tutorials or resources on pigtailing them? I’m much prefer that then to do a traditional detachable cable mod. I also saw somewhere that people were using paper towels to dim the highs a little.

I tried Brainwavz’s Memory Foam Earpads - XL - Perforated PU Leather on my DT 770 PRO 250 today.

Pros:
Definitely comfier

But

I didn’t like the signature change. The sound stage became airier, a lot of the lower frequencies were altered. Bass is still there, but seems to take a back seat. I switched back to stock, I think I like it more.

I just bought myself a pair of DT 770 80 Ohm. I slapped on a pair of generic, angled fenestrated lambskin pads, and did a bit of modding to them. I added 4 pieces of sound dampening material on the back of each driver (On the pic, only 1 piece has been applied) They sounded great stock, but now they’re even better, and the comfort has increased dramatically!

Hey guys, quick question. Looking for a solid pad swap to some leather based material on the 770s as I plan to buy them as a gift. I really don’t feel like going and buying dekonis considering the price. I swore there was a cheap replacement directly from beyer or something but for the life of me I can’t seem to find them. Anyone got some info on this? fenestrated or regular leathers are fine. I think fenestrated keep the signature more though if I remember right.

Mr. speakers/Dan Clark Audio Alpha pads work really well on the 770 imo. Not exactly cheap but might be cheaper than dekoni

nope those are expensive too.

I used brainwavz xl pleather with mine a lot when I had them. Don’t quite recall all the sonic differences but it did increase the bass quite a bit and made tthe 770 pretty fun and extremely comfortable :+1:

True but those are quite a bit larger than the form fitting pads which is why I was thinking of getting an actual beyer pad or something more on the line of form fitting to the headphone.

I do have those perforated brainwavz here in XL size.

Yup fair enough, just thought they might’ve been the ones you were thinking of and they’re pretty inexpensive as well. Good luck with your search.

My friend got these cans and he has them now and wanted an amp/dac to make things sound better for around $100, so I recommended the iFi Zen DAC. My thought was since he didn’t like how bright they were I would have him use the bass boost button. Was that a good recommendation for these, or is there something better to reduce the treble? And also all he listens to is rap and hip hop.

Also a side note would it be worth for him to invest in the Dan Clark Alpha Pads?

EDIT: Big thing I forgot to add is he has the 80 OHM version

That bass boost will distort the hell out of the dt 770 on some songs or make it very muddy lol. It does roll the treble a little though as an amp so I think your alright as a good budget option. Would’ve just gone with the fiio e10k since its only 80 ohm if I wanted to get a budget gift honestly
either way though works fine. If he wants more roll off he can get something like a liquid spark, or just keep the zen dac and grab the zen can later for the extra 3d mode[its not virtual surround] and extra power

My impressions coming from nothing to DT 770 80 ohm. About a year later

So I run these with a fiio A3. It does the job nicely but it seems like it would scale better with something more powerful.

Generally I wish I had gone for the 250ohm since it seems to be considered more refined.

The build is very nice and I couldn’t ask for more at this price. Or maybe I could ask for a detachable cable.

Weirdly at first I found these very uncomfortable, out of the box they have a very tight clamp force. Over time and with a little bending it’s better. Still not ideal for my head.

Sound

After the initial getting used to/burn in period I started to really like these. What surprised me most is how they can actually “paint” a soundstage and how they can place sounds in it. It’s not insanely big or anything but it extends form the center of your head all the way to about 10-15 cm from your ear outwards.

There is also some small verticality to the soundstage as well and an even smaller depth.

Imaging in music is decent you can really tell all the different places sounds come from. In gaming tho it does not seem that accurate.

Instruments are well separated.

Overall a very pleasant and impressive experience.

Bass goes very deep and is of high quality. You can hear different details here that I didn’t expect from my past listening experiences with worse gear. You can really feel the thump, overall very pleasant bass in both quality and quantity.

I find my self using EQ sometimes to try different levels of sub-bass. It is really fun since it doesn’t distort easily and for example you can have that exaggerated cinema like sub bass sound for movies.

Vocals appear very clear and detailed. Most of the time they are as present as I need them but on a few occasions I have felt like they are distant. I guess it depends on the audio played. In acoustic songs for example vocals will be close and centered usually just as you would expect them.

The highs
Okay so here lies a very strong feature of the headphone but also here lies its greatest weakness. In my opinion the treble sounds very nice, it packs a ton of detail. It puts a texture on the sound that I really like. Yes the sound is bright

The big weakness of the treble though is that it gets sibilant very very easily. Also a few sounds can get to the point of being sharp occasionally. These two bad characteristics can be brought to light extremely fast with a bad quality song/recording. But can also be hidden with a very good quality one.

In my opinion there is not getting away without EQ here. The problem is that as much as you try this headphone will never lose its sibilant nature. You can get it to a very good point tho if you decrease the peaks that you will find in the frequency response graphs for this headphone.

After EQ the sound keeps the high detail aspect but doesn’t get sharp and will only rarely get sibilant in music. I still find sibilance in some (not all) youtube videos where people talk. Maybe I just didn’t do the best job EQing. Maybe this can get better with a good amp.

To conclude this sounds like a v shaped but towards neutral headphone. Especially if you EQ the treble peaks. Very detailed but also very enjoyable. Boosting sub-bass with EQ can turn it into a total silly fun ear massaging type of device.

Overall I still enjoy using these daily for literally everything. A very good package and well worth the price. Really changed my listening experience. Next in sights: DT1990

Yeah I agree, these cans are great. I have the 250 ohms running off of a good amp and I believe they sound 93% as good as the 1990 on my setup.

I know I’m supper late on this, but if it’s still relevant to you these are great and fairly cheep leather pads and there is a fenestrated version as well.
