šŸ”· Schiit Modius

Thanks for the reply.

Right now I have the DT 1990, and because I saw it on amazon for $1300 new, I bought the HD 800S. I was thinking of upgrading from the Lyr 3s multibit, but youā€™re probably right that itā€™d be too similar to the MB. Looking strictly at Schiit products in this thought process because I donā€™t know the other brands that well, (and ecosystems are great right?) leads me to think the Bifrost 2 paired with Lyr 3 would be good for the 800 S.

That being said, I am sad I didnā€™t think of it beforehand, that I would want a balanced amp/dac of some kind.

Honestly if balanced is what you need, no reason to go after anything else in the DAC market. Measures exceptionally well, which equates to a clean listening experience. Bifrost 2 will just color your music with harmonic distortion and other issues, if the measurements are any indication. I personally do not want my source coloring anything. I will leave that to the headphone and maybe the amp (if tubes are your thing).

Will a loki work on a magnius/modius stack?

Also, would these things easily connect to an ipad pro, as thatā€™s kind of my work setup. Donā€™t own a computer anymore.

Sorry for the beginner questions,
Iā€™m really unfamiliar with all this.

Yes, if you use the SE connections instead of balanced.

They should. The Modius is useable directly plugged USB to a smartphone so it should be fine.

Thanks for the reply, real helpful

Lastly. Would there be a big difference between magnius/modius stack and Jotunheim with multibit?

That is, for someone that just needs a decent stack, but isnā€™t trying to do anything super fancy.

I just have some headphones that need power. Sundara and gl2000. But I only have the portable fiio q5s which doesnā€™t give em what they needā€¦

:pray:t2:

IMO, yes, but not because of the Modius but because of the Magnius. Magnius is the best amp of its kind that I 've heard so far - itā€™s kind being a measurement-focused amp. But, it gets thoroughly outperformed by its same-priced brother the Asgard 3. The Jot 2 is another semi-step up in performance from Asgard 3 but has the rare party trick in the price tier of having roughly equal performance from its SE and balanced headphone outs with slightly different signatures. I reviewed Jot 2 here. Iā€™ve not heard the Schiit MB dac module but have heard conversation around that itā€™s pretty close in performance to the Modius but the Modius gives you the flexibility of having more inputs and more upgrade paths. If you were willing to spend the money on the Jot 2 with MB module I would recommend the Jot 2 + Modius combo instead.

Thanks for the detailed reply, thatā€™s very interesting and will take this into consideration.

And I take it I could than still have the loki with that combo if I use single ended? I just like to twist knobs :man_shrugging:t2:

Youā€™re welcome. And sure. You can put the Loki between any amp and dac with SE connections. You wouldnā€™t be able to use Loki if you went with Schiitā€™s MB card.

Perfect! Sounds a great solution for music madness :pray:t2::pray:t2:

Wait until that Lokius finally drops.

Hi. I just ordered the Asgard 3 and Modius to drive my new dt880 600 ohm headphones. Is the Unison USB better to use to connect to my pc than s/pdif optical? I want to use whatever is the best quality audio. Thanks!

Congrats! Those are excellent pieces.

I canā€™t tell much of a difference between USB and SPDIF on the Modius, TBH. Try both and pick the one you like. On Schiitā€™s higher-level DACs, like BF2, Gungnir, Yggy, the Unison USB comes with galvanic isolation, and that makes a difference. IMO the BF2 sounds much better from USB than SPDIF. But Modius doesnā€™t have galvanic isolation to save some cost, so itā€™s whatevs on that one.

Thanks! I think I will try the USB for it. That cable comes with the modius right?

I donā€™t remember. Also I got my Modius second-hand and I donā€™t think there was a cable in it. I think the stock packaging comes with a small power brick and 3 foot micro usb cable, though. But donā€™t quote meā€¦

Do USB. Reviews have remarked that it is the superior input on these. Jitter measure on SPDIF was the culprit.

Does the type or brand of micro usb cable matter to connect the DAC to the PC? 2.0 or 3.0 cable thickness etc.? I plan to use one to power it and a different one to run to the PC. Thanks!

You only need a micro USB 2.0, Micro 3.0 is actually a wider connector (Schiit does provide one). Also, you only need to use one USB cable if youā€™re connecting the DAC to a PC, thatā€™s specifically how Schiit designed it. The USB power port is only meant to be used if the source is something other than USB.

I just bought some regular braided cables. Works fine for me. Iā€™m sure some ā€œsnake oilā€ cable might make one feel better so Itā€™s up to you.

Thanks. I do not want to power it from my PC. I would rather power it from the wall. it has both a power usb input and a data input on the back of the modi 3+. Is there any disadvantage to using both?
